Without being able to see people's facial expressions, their mouths moving, or their body language, it's sometimes difficult to understand them. This, of course, is why English as a second language (ESL) students need so much help in this area. The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council started its Telephone Conversation Program to address these needs. It was immediately recognized that the new program would add intensity to students' learning experiences by supplementing traditional teaching techniques. In addition, sometimes this program has the ability to shorten waiting lists, allowing students to receive help with their English skills more quickly. Hye Youn is a South Korean woman who applied to this program for a little extra practice with her speaking and listening skills. She attends an intermediate ESL group once a week with another tutor and several other students. In this article, the author describes how her telephone conversations with her first partner, Hye Youn, went and definitely recommends telephone tutoring for ESL students of all levels.
