Coaching for ADHD
Murphy, Kevin; Ratey, Nancy; Maynard, Sandy; Sussman, Susan; Wright, Sarah D.
Journal of Attention Disorders, v13 n5 p546-552 2010
Despite limited scientific study on ADHD coaching as an intervention for adults with ADHD, the field of ADHD coaching has grown significantly and gained popularity in recent years. ADHD coaching is becoming a bona fide profession where one must advance through a rigorous training process, in order to be certified as a professional ADHD coach. There are now a number of professional training institutes specifically geared to training coaches to work with both adolescents and adults with ADHD. This represents progress and is a positive step toward quality control and credibility for this important and relatively new profession. This movement toward rigorous training and credentialing requirements is an indicator that the field of ADHD coaching is maturing and is likely here to stay. Hopefully, in the near and foreseeable future, there will be more scientific study devoted to ADHD coaching to help buttress its intuitive and popular appeal as an effective intervention for adults with ADHD. In this article, three highly experienced ADHD-coaching experts discuss how they would intervene with two very different types of clients. More specifically, the experts were asked to comment on some of the factors that identify both candidates as coachable for and those that are not, among the aspirants. To this extent, two hypothetical cases that clearly contrasts with each other were created.
