In this article, the author presents his comments on Hisham Ghassib's article entitled "Where Does Creativity Fit into the Productivist Industrial Model of Knowledge Production?" Ghassib (2010) describes historical transformations of science from a marginal and non-autonomous activity which had been constrained by traditions to a self-autonomous, knowledge-producing enterprise. Its products in form of scientific knowledge cannot be derived from traditions and religious or philosophical doctrines. Autonomously generated scientific knowledge is considered by the author as the main influential factor in modern societies because it is shaping technological and economical developments. The author argues that Ghassib's statement about the importance of scientific knowledge production could be supported and generalized by further arguments: it represents a central common and defining feature of advanced societies. As a consequence, most of what constitutes developed individuals and organizations has or even should be the product of applications of scientific findings. A concluding comment refers to the relation of science and society, i.e., the general perspective that Ghassib (2010) has established at the beginning of his article. Accordingly, the importance of scientific products for society results from the application and use of these knowledge products for attaining certain purposes and functions.
