Online or Face to Face? A Comparison of Two Methods of Training Professionals

Online courses offer benefits over face-to-face courses such as accessibility, affordability, and flexibility. Literature assessing the effectiveness of face-to-face and online courses is growing, but findings remain inconclusive. This study compared evaluations completed by professionals who had taken a research update short course either face to face or online. Both the online and face-to-face courses resulted in significantly increased understanding across each content area. However, no significant differences were found between the delivery methods with respect to changes in understanding. These findings suggest that online and face-to-face courses can be equally effective in delivering professional development materials. (Contains 3 tables.)
