The current interest in learning Chinese has been fueled by the growing strength of the Chinese economy and the need for Americans who are able to communicate at an advanced level in fields of business, science, and government. The present study reports the results of a survey of secondary school students enrolled in Chinese language classes with respect to their reasons for enrolling in Chinese, their plans for continuing their study of Chinese, and what they especially enjoyed about their classes. Significant differences were found between Asian and White students regarding their motivations. Asian students were more likely to enroll in Chinese based on reasons related to travel and recreation whereas White students were more likely to report reasons related to academic learning and job preparation. Across grade levels and ethnicities, 24% of the students reported that they planned to continue their study of Chinese for at least 4 more years. Potential challenges of expanding Chinese language enrollments are addressed in the discussion. (Contains 6 tables.)
