Identifies commonly accepted characteristics of professions and proposes as the most important defining property of a profession the availability of a useful, communicable technology based in a reasonably coherent intellectual discipline. The qualifications of psychology as a profession, with special emphasis on clinical applications of psychological knowledge, are then reviewed. (Author/JM)
