Two surveys were directed to Florida employers that employed former vocational education students in 1988. The surveys obtained information describing employer opinions regarding general and specific vocational preparation of workers for employment. The 1989-90 employer general opinion survey examined hiring needs, general preparation, and specific preparation; responses were received from 33% of 2,034 firms surveyed. A second survey was limited to employers who hired former registered and licensed practical nursing students; 337 usable responses were obtained from 489 firms. Florida employers were generally satisfied with vocationally specific preparation and were slightly dissatisfied with the general educational preparation of workers, specifically reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Health services employers were satisfied with registered and practical nurses in terms of the competencies imparted by their training and were generally more satisfied with the preparation of registered nurses. The highest levels of satisfaction of health services employers were reflected in the ability of nurses to work with fellow employees and provide personal care to patients. A comparison of the surveys with previous ones showed the following: the general survey satisfaction levels remained consistent; registered nurse responses were consistently at higher levels of satisfaction for all skill areas; and employers representing each industry type were satisfied with all areas of occupational preparation.
