Alvin Ailey--Theatre Activity Packet.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.
Intended for elementary school teachers who wish to implement a lesson on dance theater and dance as an art form to be used in conjunction with live performance, this guide offers classroom and extracurricular activities to teach children about various aspects of dance. Part 1 of the guide includes an introduction to Manhattan's City Center, a theater known for spectacular dance performances. Worksheets are included that show children the layout of seats in the theater and how to read a theater ticket. Additional sections include the history of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, the American Dance Center, and tips for teachers on preparing students to see a live dance performance. Part 2 of the guide gives suggestions for teaching about dance as an art form, such as creating prior knowledge maps, offering vocabulary sheets of dance terms, learning about the job of the choreographer, and reading summaries of ballet plots. Part 3 of the guide offers activities to complete after seeing a performance, such as studying sample reviews and having the students write one of their own. (Appendixes contain a glossary of theater terms, a list of books and magazines about dance, and names and addresses of several New York dance companies as resources for teachers.) (JC)
