Yo misma fui mi ruta: La mujer en la historia y cultura de Puerto Rico [I Was My Own Path: Women in the History and Culture of Puerto Rico].
Pico, Isabel; And Others
This teaching guide on women in Puerto Rican history and culture is intended for use in third and fourth grade social studies classes. The book begins with a discussion of the omission of women's roles from most history textbooks and points out the implications of this omission for the knowledge and socialization of both male and female Puerto Rican children. Then chapters are presented that describe the accomplishments of Taino women, Spanish women at the time of colonization, black women as slaves and free persons and Creole (mixed race) Puerto Rican women. Following these general descriptions are brief biographies of several women who made important contributions in the areas of Puerto Rican education, politics, workers' rights, women's rights, literature and poetry, and fine arts. These women include Celestina Cordero, Mariana Bracetti, Luisa Capetillo, Juana Colon, Mariquita la Platera, Sylvia Rexach, and Julia de Burgos. Each chapter in this guide also provides a bibliography and several questions to be asked of students. (GC)
