The Migration Plans of Upper-Grade Students in Small Towns of Russia
Florinskaia, Iu. F.; Roshchina, T.G.
Russian Education and Society, v48 n6 p44-62 Jun 2006
This article presents a survey that was carried out in 2004 to assess the level of migration mobility on the part of young inhabitants in the small cities of Russia. The survey was participated in by eleventh-grade (senior) students. The total number of respondents was 500 (100 in each community); 61% were girls and 39% were boys. The statistical data were obtained from city administrators, materials in the local, oblast, and central press, and the Internet. The main sources of income in the respondents' families are the parents' wages and salaries (91% of the students). On average, the parents of 17 percent of the students earn money by work migration. The results of the survey have shown that what are most important to students are having an education, a profession, and a family. The survey shows a very high level of migration mobility among young people in the small towns of Russia: according to direct and indirect assessments, about two-thirds of them are prepared to get out of their home area. Originally, their intent is to migrate temporarily for the purpose of obtaining an education as well as to have a job that pays good money. In the pursuit of their goals, they are perfectly willing to change their place of residence. (Contains 2 tables and 2 notes.)
