Use of Synchronous Online Tools in Private English Language Teaching in Russia
Kozar, Olga
Distance Education, v33 n3 p415-420 2012
Like many other industries, private tutoring is now being transformed by the growth of information and communication technologies (ICT). An increasing number of educational entrepreneurs in different countries are incorporating Internet tools in their professional practice. While the popularity of online tutoring in countries with widespread Internet, such as Korea and the United States, is predictable, especially if people consider that over 50% of the U.S. population was using the Internet in 2002, the current status of private online tutoring in countries like Russia where widespread Internet usage is a relatively new phenomenon is unclear (Russia reached the 50% benchmark only in 2012). This report presents some evidence of private online tutoring in Russia and the use of free synchronous online tools for this purpose. (Contains 2 figures.)
