Yes! We Are Rocket Scientists!
Macduff, J. Trevor
Science Scope, v30 n1 p48-53 Sep 2006
This article is an outline of what the author did in his classroom to incorporate the help of two volunteer engineers to create a powerful learning unit and cumulative review for his eighth-grade physical science students. This unit reviews what students have learned during the school year regarding force, motion, Newton's laws, gas laws, and center of gravity. This unit is designed to cover three weeks at the end of the year. Students working in groups spend a couple days researching the basics and history of rockets, then dive right into the design and building. This unit has three parts: (1) Basics of rocketry; (2) Science of rocketry; and (3) Power of partnership. At the end of this activity, students are able to define their problem, consider the control of variables, and recognize the viability of their experimental procedure better than they had after any other activity they had done before.
