The Oral History of Evaluation: The Professional Development of James R. Sanders
American Journal of Evaluation, v31 n1 p118-130 2010
Over a period spanning 8 years, the Oral History Project Team has conducted interviews with individuals who have made significant contributions to the scholarship, practice, and profession of evaluation. In 2006, Robin Miller, Chris Coryn, and Daniela Schroeter conducted an oral history interview with James R. Sanders at the Evaluation Center that is based at the Western Michigan University. Sanders is an emeritus professor of education and past Associate Director of The Evaluation Center at the Western Michigan University. A former president of the American Evaluation Association (AEA), Sanders and Blaine Worthen produced one of the earliest comprehensive textbooks on evaluation (Worthen & Sanders, 1973, 1987). The book remains among the best selling introductory texts on evaluation. In this interview, Sanders traces his career path from a focus on the physical sciences to the social sciences to evaluation. He goes on to describe the growth and progression in his view of evaluation as more than the mere application of experimental methods to programs, and expands on the diverse set of evaluation experiences that shaped how his ideas on mainstreaming were formed. The interview also highlights the career and intellectual benefit of service to one's profession and of associating with colleagues who delight in creating generative opportunities for others. Mark (Pennsylvania State University). This interview was transcribed by Sara Cottrill and Peter Hubbard and edited by Jim Sanders and Robin Miller.]
