Efficacy, Outcomes, and Empowerment Evaluation of a School District NET Project, Part II: School and Community Impact. Research Brief.
Miller-Whitehead, Marie
This study addressed assessing the efficacy and outcomes of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Nutrition Education Training (NET) project designed to increase awareness of health risk and wellness factors for grade 9 students. Although this paper reprises results from a survey of 125 ninth graders about the NET curriculum, the focus of this part of the study is on school and community NET impact. Community participants were drawn from two school districts, local hospitals and universities, local health agencies, and volunteer organizations, including the 4-H program. In all, there were more than 1,500 ninth grade participants and a number of school and community partners involved in the training and curriculum delivery. A results mapping scheme was developed to measure outcomes on the multiple objectives of the program with mapping sentences for each of the facets of the project. This scheme became quite complex, and an additional results mapping scheme should be developed to address the school district and community participation component of the project. This would allow several ways to assess perceptions of the degree of relative difficulty on attainment of dimensions. Program efficacy should be assessed in terms of benefits to the community based on a number of considerations, including costs, numbers of students served, results, attitude changes, and the effects of school and community interactions. Two appendixes contain questions from the Net assessment and a wellness survey. (Contains 7 tables, 3 figures, and 19 references.) (SLD)
