A Rejoinder to Commentaries on "Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights and Business Schools' Responsibility to Teach It"
McPhail, Ken
Accounting Education, v22 n4 p421-424 2013
Encouragingly, Professors Andrew and Everett broadly agree with McPhail (2013) that the emerging business and human rights discourse could add to our critical understanding of sustainability and, as such, should have a place within business schools' curricula. Professor Everett, however, cautions that the potential of the business and human rights discourse to contribute towards a more just and sustainable future may be limited in two respects. He argues that it is limited firstly because it is grounded in neo-liberal ideology and secondly because the provisions of the United Nation's (UN's) "Guiding Principles" are not supported in international law. This rejoinder to Andrew and Everett's commentaries addresses both of these concerns and concludes by highlighting some recent developments within the field that would seem to further underline the growing significance of the business and human rights discourse. [This paper is in response to the following commentaries: (1) "Incorporating Human Rights into the Sustainability Agenda: A Commentary on 'Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights and Business Schools' Responsibility to Teach It'" (Andrew 2013) (EJ1108913); and (2) "A Commentary on 'Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights and Business Schools' Responsibility to Teach It'" (Everett 2013) (EJ1108912).] [For "Corporate Responsibility to Respect Human Rights and Business Schools' Responsibility to Teach It: Incorporating Human Rights into the Sustainability Agenda" (McPhail 2013), see EJ1108813.]
