The purpose of this study was to describe the leadership and personal development abilities possessed by four groups of male high school seniors. These groups were those high school seniors who participated in high quality (superior) Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters and low quality (non-superior) FFA chapters and those from schools with superior and non-superior FFA chapters who were never enrolled in vocational agriculture. The sample came from 16 schools in Middle Tennessee. Three instruments were developed to gather data: the student questionnaire, 66 criterion-referenced multiple-choice questions to measure leadership and personal development abilities, and anecdotal information (student time devoted to instruction on 10 areas within FFA according to vocational agriculture teachers). Conclusions based upon study findings were that (1) the extent to which students who enrolled in vocational agriculture/FFA for four years possess leadership and personal development abilities is much less than the profession should be willing to accept, and (2) vocational agriculture/FFA students possess significantly more leadership and personal development abilities than non-vocational agriculture students.
