Create an Athletic Handbook: A Contract for Athletes and Parents
Elliot, Steven
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v21 n4 p7-12 Mar-Apr 2008
At the start of each athletic season, it is crucial that all athletes, parents, and coaches are on the same page in terms of team rules, expectations, and other important information. Traditionally, information such as eligibility requirements and playing time allocation has been transmitted verbally to student athletes through meetings at the end of practice. This can be problematic, as athletes can misunderstand the message or incorrectly relay it to their parents. As the season progresses, lack of communication can result in disgruntled athletes, parents, and coaches. The purpose of this article is to help coaches develop a handbook that clearly outlines team policies and procedures. The article is separated into two main parts; the first half introduces the suggested contents of a handbook, while the second half provides an example of a high school soccer team handbook.
