A special curriculum to be used in training sessions on Mexican American culture was developed to assist Texas Department of Human Resources personnel with service delivery for Mexican American children. Designed to heighten awareness in caseworkers and other personnel on the cultural variables affecting their relationship with Mexican American clients, the curriculum is organized into three modules which may be conducted in two days or in three half-day sessions. The first module introduces the Mexican American family and culture, the Mexican heritage in Texas, the role of culture in social casework, and the practice of Curanderismo, which involves faith healing and the use of medicinal herbs. The second module involves the Mexican American community as it looks at the barrio and its resources and undesirable characteristics. It also examines the effects of migrant life on many Mexican Americans. Situational conditions related to child welfare and resources useful to child welfare in the barrio are discussed, along with obstacles to effective casework intervention. The final module deals with aspects of the Mexican American family, including child abuse and neglect, the effect of poverty as it relates to neglect cases, family relationships, and patterns of behavior common to Mexican American children. Videotapes and slides are used as supplements. Discussions to exchange ideas and opinions are considered essential to the successful learning process and conclude each module. (DS)
