Adventure Education and the Returning Military Veteran: What Do We Know?
Ewert, Alan; Van Puymbroeck, Marieke; Frankel, Jon; Overholt, Jillisa
Journal of Experiential Education, v33 n4 p365-369 Spr 2011
This article describes two studies examining the effects of an experiential and adventure-based program (Outward Bound) on returning military veterans. The assumption underlying these studies is the belief that adventure-based programs can serve as a beneficial mediator in the reintegration of returning military veterans into society. The two studies reported here provide support for the efficacy of Outward Bound Veteran Program (OBVP) in terms of specific variables associated with personal development, sense of coherence, and overall well-being. The OBVP is specifically designed for military veteran populations, and it is an example of a type of intervention utilizing components of experiential-based activities in remote outdoor settings, conducted within small group cohorts.
