Environmental Education outside the Classroom
Brown, Galen
Understanding Our Gifted, v23 n1 p3-6 Fall 2010
What is "environmental education"? Perhaps the most simplistic view is that it is only curriculum that pertains directly to the environment. But, another way to define environmental education is to focus on the frameworks within which these issues are examined. For instance, almost all environmental problems are examined through a scientific lens, making basic chemistry a fundamental part of environmental education. Environmental education and the goal of promoting positive conservation principles can only be furthered by expanding to engage students and the public in their homes and in their community. The larger point is that positive community examples and reinforcement of what one has learned in the classroom are essential to instilling a lasting comprehension and engagement of those topics. This article explores positive community reinforcement and what it means for environmental education.
