The problems of integrating the multiple dimensions of a language contact situation in linguistic research have been of concern in recent years. The use of macro- (collective or group) and micro- (individual) levels of linguistic analysis illustrates this concern. Quebec's International Center for Research on Bilingualism has developed an interdisciplinary project bringing together aspects of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, anthropology, sociology, communications, political science, and law in the study of language contact. It is designed for analysis of the interrelations among language communities on four dimensions: demographic, cultural, economic, and political. The validity of the interdisciplinary analytical model will be tested in a study of the legal and sociopolitical aspects of language conflicts in four Canadian provinces.
