How to Help Yourself. THE Art of Program Development.
Carkhuff, Robert R.
The profusely illustrated booklet suggests ways for developing the personal skills necessary for individual program development for achieving personal goals. With two hypothetical characters, June and Ray, to illustrate the booklet's suggestions, methods of estimating and testing physical, emotional, and intellectual traits necessary for establishing the starting point of program development are discussed. With regard to deciding on an achievable goal, techniques of choosing the level at which the goal will be realized (leader, contributor, participant, observer, or detractor), and "operationalizing" the goal, that is, breaking it down into observable and measurable dimensions, are presented. Regarding developing the program, suggestions cover the construction of steps extending from the starting point to the goal in order of increasing complexity, the treatment of each step as a goal, and the establishment of guideposts to check progress along the way. Insuring getting to the goal is facilitated by employing the six R's of program development: repeating, reviewing, rehearsing, rewriting, reinforcing, and recycling. It is suggested that a goalseeker may be sure of getting anywhere providing that the phases of exploring, understanding, and acting are continually recycled in the transfer from an achieved goal to a projected one.
