Gypsies and Travellers. Socio-Cultural Data, Socio-Political Data. Dossiers for the Intercultural Training of Teachers.
Liegeois, Jean-Pierre
Written for the intercultural training of teachers, this document deals with Gypsies and Travellers and their families, presenting information under the broad headings of socio-cultural data and socio-political data. Introductory material stresses the diversity of Gypsy reality and the need for information to correct the prejudices and stereotypes that lie behind what is done on their behalf. Part I discusses the origins and dispersal of Gypsies; provides information about population numbers, habitats, and names given to Gypsies; characterizes the Romani language and its many dialects; and summarizes social organization including marriage and social control. Other topics are life style, art, religion, travelling, economic organization, and the family. The socio-political data provided in Part II include the status of Gypsies and Travellers and their reception by local people and authorities, the role of the school and social welfare agencies, and the evolution of gypsy organizations. Appendices include a basic bibliography of the most comprehensive and accessible works plus addresses of organizations of Gypsies and Travellers. Also included are a directory of collaborators from 18 countries and the recommendations of the Council of Europe concerning the social situation of nomads. (JHZ)
