School Staffing Ratios, 1986-87. ERS Report.
Educational Research Service, Arlington, VA.
This companion study to the three-part report, "National Survey of Salaries and Wages in Public Schools, 1986-87," offers administrators and policymakers accurate and timely data for comparing staffing ratios in their own school systems with those of similar enrollment size and expenditure level. Pupil-staff and teacher-staff ratios were provided by 1,043 public school systems. Staffing data are presented and analyzed according to two classifications: (1) By four enrollment groupings of school systems (25,000 or more pupils, 10,000 to 24,999, 2,500 to 9,999, and 300 to 2,499); (2) by five per-pupil-expenditure levels of school systems ($5,000 or more per pupil, $4,000 to $4,999, $3,300 to $3,999, $2,800 to $3,299, and less than $2,800). The report includes two summary tables showing the mean number of pupils and of teachers per professional and per administrative staff member; 21 tables showing percentile distributions, means, and ranges of pupil-staff and teacher-staff ratios by enrollment group; and 21 tables showing percentile distributions, means, and ranges of staffing ratios by per-pupil-expenditure level and enrollment group. An introduction describes the study's scope, staffing definition, sample design, summary analysis, and proper use of data. (CJH)
