What does it mean to be a Muslim woman? Even a basic understanding could help to dispel generalizations and stereotypes, especially in the context of education. With the controversies related to the wearing of the headscarf in educational institutions, to the general assumption that Muslim women are disempowered, this is even more important for those working closely with young Muslims in educational institutions. However, even with these additions to the discussion, one has to refrain from making generalizations about Muslim women; just as coming up with a generalization of the reality of a Christian man would be inaccurate for all the multiple realities of individuals who identify themselves as such. To begin understanding the myriads of realties that represent the identities of women who identify themselves as Muslims, the author analyzes the traditional and the current representations of them in western culture.
