This collection of essays discusses a variety of issues raised by the images of black Americans as portrayed in literary works written for children. The editors specifically address their introduction to librarians and educators, arguing that there has not been sufficient awareness of the racist content of many books circulated in libraries and used in classrooms. The first section of the book contains essays discussing criteria for distinguishing between racist and nonracist children's books. The second section contains essays discussing the presence of racism in some books awarded the Newbery Prize. Some more modern examples of alleged racist books are discussed in the third section, and some earlier examples of such books are discussed in the fourth section. The last part of the book includes essays discussing racism and the publishing industry.
