The Racialistic Incidents Inventory (RII) was developed to measure individual awareness of eight types of racialistic incidents. Racialistic incidents were defined as situations in which behaviors or attitudes are directed toward a particular racial/ethnic group; these may reflect racist or nonracist attitudes. The typology of incidents was obtained by identifying them on three dimensions: (l) setting (whether the racialistic orientation is carried by an individual or an institution); (2) mode of expression (overt or covert); and (3) manifestation (attitudes or behavior). On this basis, one type of racial incident was identified as individual/ overt/attitudinal, another institutional/covert/behavioral, and so on through the eight possible combinations. A revised 156-item inventory was generated after testing the original, longer instrument for validity among undergraduates. Items consisted of statements that subjects rated for the amount of racial prejudicial content, according to a seven-point scale. Along with the RII, the Racialistic Contents Scale (RCS), an instrument to measure racist and nonracist racialistic content in attitudes, was administered to examine relationships between racialist attitudes and awareness of racialist incidents. Results suggested that the extent of one's racialism, racist or nonracist, determines the level of awareness of racialistic incidents. (Author/MJL)
