This book provides those new to the field with a blend of practical and theoretical information. The author addresses a spectrum of recent information about the process of qualitative educational research and brings together in one volume the essential elements of all aspects of the field. The text: (1) Introduces traditions and influences in the field; (2) Focuses on aspects of methodology; and (3) Addresses issues relating to meaning, communication, and judging: The book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying qualitative educational research. Following a preface, the contents of the book are divided into three parts. Part 1, Traditions and Influences, presents: Introduction; An Overview of the Field; Insights from the Past; Learning How to Be a Qualitative Researcher; and Exploring Traditions and Approaches. Part 3, Putting It All Together, concludes with: Making Meaning from Your Data; Communicating Your Ideas; Judging and Evaluating; and Self Reflexivity and Subjectivity. An epilogue, "Keeping Abreast of an Evolving Field," and an appendix, "Checklist for Individual and Focus Group Interviews," are also included.
