Digital Liberal Arts at a Distance: A Consortium-Wide Approach
Pearson, Ellen Holmes; McClurken, Jeffrey; Bailey, Claire
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v48 n3 p14-21 2016
Over the past decade, campus-based digital liberal arts projects have extended high-impact undergraduate research across disciplines and beyond the traditional print medium for the production and dissemination of knowledge. But many small- to medium-sized liberal arts colleges, and especially public liberal arts colleges, often lack the infrastructure, faculty technical expertise, and requisite fiscal resources to integrate digital scholarship into the curriculum (Alexander and Davis, 2012). In an effort to address this challenge, two faculty members from separate institutions developed and led an innovative, distance-taught digital liberal arts seminar in 2014 and 2015 involving student researchers from 15 public liberal arts campuses. In spring 2016, the distance seminar model was scaled up to include additional campuses and new research topics. The multi-campus seminars combine the virtual and the local--engaging students in exploring and mastering digital tools and resources while delving into the histories of their own campuses and communities with traditional archival research. Undergraduate researchers collaborate across campuses to build major digital projects available to the public on the web and to develop research, production, and communications skills applicable to a wide variety of 21st-century professions.
