The author states that, the sex-role identity of both men and women forms and changes as a function of the conditions of upbringing, schooling, and the degree of pressure of sex-role stereotypes that are instilled by the mass media. In spite of the proclaimed "equal opportunities" for men and women when it comes to acquiring some profession, stereotypical notions about "men's" or "women's" specialties as they have been formed historically still hold sway among a substantial portion of the population. A meta-analysis of gender differences in the importance of particular characteristics of work when it comes to the choice of a profession showed that thirty-three to forty features are substantive; the most pronounced differences are associated with the idea that women prefer to work with people and view the quality of relations on the job as one of the main factors in the choice of a profession, while men attach basic importance to freedom and autonomy of activity. Incidentally, when compared to the findings of surveys in the 1970s to the 1990s, gender differences have become smaller, presumably because of increasingly stronger processes of female self-actualization. While, research in the field of gender psychology has become timely owing to the rapidly changing social and economic conditions, especially in economically developed countries and one of the areas that are acknowledged to be the most promising is the study of the changeability of sex-role stereotypes as a function of professional choice. In connection with this, the purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between the profile of basic life values and the prominence of feminine and masculine qualities among college students majoring in different specialties. With the results of the survey, the author concludes therefore, that even though both the men and the women give similar definitions to leading and unacceptable life stances, the profile of their life priorities is modified depending not only on gender but also on the choice of profession, which, in turn, is substantially determined by the respondent's qualities of personality as they have been formed.
