Life Skills Project
Bates, Jan P.
Journal of Correctional Education, v56 n2 p101-107 Jun 2005
In this article, Bates, the Inmate Programs Manager of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, Florida, describes her office's Life Skills Project, a comprehensive program that has significantly enhanced three existing programs by adding extensive life skills components. The added life skills modules reinforce the importance of treatment, counseling, education, job and vocational training skills, as well as personal financial management and family relationship development. The Sheriff's office forms partnerships with both public and private sector agencies within the community to insure that the inmates will continue to receive the services that were initiated within the jail. Evaluation of the program indicates that it is a highly effective, innovative, and comprehensive program of counseling, treatment, and training. (Contains 5 tables and 3 figures.)
