The School of Education of Syracuse University implemented EXPER SIM, a computer simulation program, in a graduate program in instructional technology. During a one-semester course each student planned a program of research, developed a proposal for at least one experimental study, collected simulated data using EXPER SIM, analyzed and interpreted the data, prepared a paper, and presented it at a mock convention. EXPER SIM was used to focus on the research process rather than on specific theory or constructs. Evaluation of the course showed that students felt EXPER SIM was an effective technical tool for learning experimental research concepts and processes. The authors make four recommendations to facilitate the use of EXPER SIM: documentation on systems and procedures for EXPER SIM should be provided; time and assistance in installing and implementing the program should be made available; a cookbook of practical examples for the novice model builder be useful; and problems of generating new models could be reduced by the development of general model subroutines.
