A three-year project was conducted to develop a competency-based college major aimed at preparing contemporary nurses, both basic preservice and degree completion R.N.'s to deliver family-centered care in acute settings or community health settings. The competency-based major was developed using a conceptual framework that introduces family-centered care in the sophomore year, episodic nursing at the junior level (pscho-biological stress episodes), and application of preventative health concepts included in distributive nursing at the senior level. Faculty identified the family-centered, episodic, and distributive nursing competencies for which nurses need to be prepared, designed behavioral objectives for each course and competencies for each learning module as well as learning modes and performance criteria. Evaluation measures were formulated and instructional media for the autotutorial modules were purchased or produced at the college to support mastery of these competencies. A Health Instruction Center was established to further implement the autotutorial mastery approaches to learning. Appendixes contain competencies to be mastered each year, course sequence for the nursing major, study guides, and position descriptions for personnel needed for staffing the program. (KC)
