The Jefferson County (Florida) Career Education Project was designed to meet the needs of this predominantly low-income, non-white community. The objectives were (1) to increase self-awareness and career awareness in grades K-5; (2) in grades 6-8 to increase self-awareness and career knowledge in the clusters of Agri-Business and Natural Resources, Business and Office, Communications and Media, Construction, and Health; (3) to increase career maturity, knowledge of training opportunities, and to improve career related decision-making skills in grades 9-12; (4) to decrease sex and race stereotyping related to careers in grades K-12; and (5) to increase public awareness of career education and public support of school programs in Jefferson County. Inservice training was provided for teachers of the school system. The project staff procured a wide variety of career-related materials and distributed them to teachers for instructional use. Thirty-five resource persons made career-oriented presentations to students, and a number of field trips were made within Jefferson County and to nearby Tallahassee to increase the career awareness of students. A concentrated dissemination effort using a wide variety of media was made to increase public awareness. In order to evaluate the success of the project, a variety of instruments was administered to students at each grade level in a one-group pre/post test design.
