Policymakers, researchers, and educators are calling for practicing teachers to assume leadership positions in schools. The goal is for these teacher leaders to work with administrators and bring about school improvements. To prepare teachers for this role, universities are encouraged to provide leadership opportunities for students aspiring to become teachers. This case study examined 21 pre-service teachers who served as officers of local chapters of an honorary professional organization in education. Data from interviews and surveys showed that participants wanted to lead an organization in their career field, that they became confident in their leadership abilities through the experience of serving as an officer and through interacting with faculty and former officers, and that during their tenure they also learned the importance of collaboration and communication. The findings suggest that collegiate organizations are a way universities can prepare future teacher leaders.
