Female Superintendent Longevity in California
Rohlfing, Tracy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California Lutheran University
The purpose of this study was to investigate, through narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000), the leadership evolution of five female superintendents in California with longevity of 5 or more years in their current school district positions. The research question addressed was, "How do California female superintendents evolve to longevity?" Demographic data regarding the superintendents and their districts were gathered through website perusal and electronic surveys. Narrative profiles were created after structured interviews, and 11 themes emerged to form a descriptive framework of the superintendents' leadership. In addition, the leadership styles of the superintendents were identified and found to be consistent with those defined in feminine leadership theory. The participants defined their leadership as: (a) caring, (b) ethical, (c) interactive, (d) relational, and (e) power-shared. Participants' leadership was found to be transformative (Bennis, 2002) and consistent with findings regarding feminine leadership theory by Shakeshaft, Brown, Irby, Grogan, and Ballenger (2007). Recommendations for future research include exploring, through quantitative analysis, the themes of the study for all California female superintendents with tenure of five or more years, and pursuing a similar qualitative study with male superintendents with longevity to compare findings.
