Differing Types of Higher Education. Papers of the International Association of Universities. No. 14.

Papers are presented from the fourth seminar of the International Association of Universities (IAU) held in Alexandria, Egypt. Inaugural addresses are presented by M.L. Dowidar, former president of the University of Alexandria, A.R. El Heneidey, President of the University of Alexandria, H.E. Abd El Tawab Hodeib, Governor of Alexandria, and Roger Gaudry, President of IAU. The theme, "the structures of university teaching and research," was addressed by P. Gonzales-Casenova from Latin America and by Mouley-Kriss Chabou from Algeria. A discussion on the political and ideological role of universities follows the addresses. The second theme, "the university and other forms of higher education," was addressed by Walter Kroll from Germany and by A.A. Abdalla from Africa. A discussion on the actual functioning of the Gesamthochschule follows. A more in-depth examination of the structures of university teaching and research included an address by H. Ahrweiler from Paris on the essential characteristics of this area, an address by T. Kashiwazaki on innovation, and an address by O. Oladapo from Lagos. An examination of integrated systems of the university included remarks by Alberto Cazorla-Talleri from Peru and by W.J. Rodewald from Poland. An examination of diversified systems of the university included remarks by A.A. El Fadda of Saudi Arabia and G.D. Rochester from the United Kingdom. A summary and conclusions are included. (SW)
