This checklist and accompanying video are designed to help family child care providers assess the health and safety of the child care home. The checklist includes suggestions for conducting the self-evaluation and for creating a safer, healthier home environment. The areas of the checklist are: your home, out of bounds areas, gates and guards, storage, infant/toddler equipment, outdoor play, emergency planning, and health and hygiene. Additional notes explain the health or safety danger identified in each item on the checklist and offer suggestions for making changes to increase health and safety. A form for developing a plan of action is included as well as a list of community agencies for additional information and assistance. Completing the manual are resource pages on safety routines and drills such as location of space heaters, fire escape plans, poisonous and safe plants, choking prevention, handwashing, and diaper changing. The accompanying 20-minute videotape, for use in conjunction with the checklist, was filmed in a family child care home and presents some of the possible safety hazards that may exist in typical family child care settings.
