This study of the origin and history of the University of Vermont College of Medicine begins with the appointment of John Pomeroy to the faculty in 1804, and traces the years that followed. Chiefly concerned with the individuals who were involved, it is a case study of the responses of one small medical school to reform movements, and its ability to survive under continuing threats from such groups as the Carnegie Foundation, the American Medical Association, and the Association of American Medical Colleges. It is presented as a model for rural states fighting to support a medical school. Among the topics covered are: faculty development; the faculty and trustees; physical plant development; curriculum development; and student life. Some photographs are included, as is a bibliography.
