Enhancing Hands-On Science Experiences with Informational Texts: Learning about Pine Cones
Yopp, Ruth Helen
Science Activities: Classroom Projects and Curriculum Ideas, v43 n3 p31-34 Fall 2006
Hands-on explorations can be extended through interactions with informational texts, enhancing both science learning and literacy development. In this article, the author describes a primary-grade science activity that begins with students examining pine cones and sharing their experiences and observations with peers. The students then generate questions about pine cones and read to find the answers to their questions. Finally, they express their new understandings in writing and illustration by creating their own books about pine cones. The production of class books requires students to think about and organize content and promotes use of the language of science.
