Although high school students cannot control every aspect of their school education, they do have the power to make changes in their education program. As they influence major parts of their IEP, they gain more freedom and more control over what happens to them. This action sheet describes three steps for high school students to consider in taking ownership of their IEP's, and provides helpful suggestions to assist students as they engage in thoughtful discussion with friends, and family members about their future plans. The three steps are: (1) Start thinking about what the student wants in life; (2) Set one goal at a time; and (3) Know who can help reach the goals. Taking an active role in developing their IEP will help students: (1) Gain the information, skills, and support they need to reach their future goals; (2) Start turning dreams into reality; (3) Discover what really matters to them; and (4) Have more control over their time and activities at school.
