This curriculum guide provides materials for a 10-unit intravenous (IV) therapy course for licensed practical nurses. Units contain from one to nine lessons. The first unit provides an introduction and orientation to the course. Subsequent units concern documentation, anatomy and physiology as applied to IV therapy, fundamental aspects of fluid and electrolyte balance, recognition and prevention of IV therapy-related complications, administration of IV fluid therapy, IV fluid therapy maintenance, pharmacological considerations of IV medication, blood transfusion therapy, and total parenteral nutrition. Each lesson contains the following components: scope of unit, lesson objectives, informational assignment, references, introduction, outline of content, summary and conclusion, interaction items (questions to stimulate and encourage student interaction), classroom/laboratory activities, and evaluation items. Handouts, assignment sheets, and transparency masters are also provided as needed. The document concludes with a bibliography, a chart of learning objectives to record student achievement, and a certificate. (YLB)
