Using 1985 school enrollment data for persons 3 to 34 years old, this report discusses increases and decreases in overall enrollments by race and ethnicity. Data on school completion rates are also presented. They reveal that the Hispanic population of 3- to 24-year-olds is growing at a faster rate than either Blacks or Whites, and thus becoming a larger proportion of each age cohort and of each grade level. The analysis also reveals that Hispanic 3- to 4-year-olds and 17- to 24-year-olds are proportionately less likely to be enrolled in school than either Blacks or Whites. This rapid growth of Hispanics at all school age levels will continue to place demands on an educational system which in many instances is not adequately serving Hispanic children. The need for a more appropriate education for Hispanics will continue to increase; the gap in educational attainment between Hispanic and other Americans must be eliminated.
