School Safety: Safer Schools with Different Kinds of Safety Personnel
Herreras, Henry
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, La Sierra University
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference between the total number of education code violations and the security personnel assigned by the school district. This study also proposed to examine factors such as socio-economic level of the district, the size of the district, and its location. Due to the increase in violence in schools during the past 20 years, safety on school campuses is a major concern for local communities. Students and the schools they attend may be affected by violence, which infiltrates from their communities. For the study, suburban, city, and rural public high school districts in the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, and South Dakota were invited to participate. The multiple districts involved in the study were classified and combined into groups according to their student populations in order to get a more accurate and fair comparison of personnel and violence related incidents. The enrollments of these districts varied from 199 to more than 44,500 students. Results of the study indicated that the total numbers of violations are at their lowest (8 out of 10) with two specific types of security personnel: 1. Full-time school resource officer on all campuses (low presence-high skill personnel), and 2. High numbers of full-time campus supervisors (high presence-low skill personnel).
