A project was conducted to help fifty-one academically disadvantaged students in grade 10 to gain a greater awareness of their own interests and abilities, career alternatives, and job responsibilities. Students were selected who lacked one or more of the following characteristics: awareness of employment opportunities, job skills necessary to enter various fields, personal strengths, and decision-making skills. These students were placed in a career awareness course which met daily for fifty minutes over a twenty-week period. Course activities included value clarification exercises, discussions, career decision-making exercises, audio-visual presentations, speakers, field trips, assigned readings, and individual and group counseling. After an initial pre-test students concentrated on self-awareness for the first four weeks, career exploration for the second four weeks, and discovering careers for the remaining twelve weeks. Staff and students agreed that the project was a definite success. Of the student participants 77 per cent experienced positive changes (improved academic performances, improved school attendance, more positive self-image, more dedication to school work and choosing career goals, and increased initiative to make future goals).
