Financial Literacy Skills of Students in Urban and Rural High Schools
Valentine, Gregory P.; Khayum, Mohammed
Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, v47 n1 p1-10 Win 2005
The purpose of this study was to determine the affect of various demographic and economic socialization factors on the results of a personal finance literacy quiz administered to rural and urban high school students in Indiana. Urban students had an average score of 50% on the quiz and rural students had a an average score of 51%. Planning to pursue postsecondary education and working up to 20 hours per week were positively related to students having higher overall scores on the financial literacy quiz. Having parents with annual incomes of $50-75,000 per year also had a positive impact on students having higher quiz scores. There was an inverse relationship between financial literacy scores and the amount students saved per week. Overall, the students' low scores on the literacy quiz indicates insufficient coverage of personal finance topics in high school curriculums. (Contains 4 tables.)
