How do other countries fund their public schools? Through an analysis of common traits, such as the total percentage of funding for education in relation to the annual gross domestic product (GDP) and the annual per-pupil expenditures (correlated to the U.S. dollar), one can start to develop a clearer perspective on basic school-funding differences around the world. To explore this question, the author studied eight countries. Seven are members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of 34 countries that have formed an alliance to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world and to share and interpret data. Brazil, a non-OECD member, adds a deeper level of cross-cultural analysis beyond the OECD nations. In this article, the author shares his findings. (Contains 1 table.)
