Numeracy of Young Children in Singapore, Beijing and Helsinki

Young children's number sense is essential for the acquisition of higher number skills in later years. Most recent studies focus on children over 6 years of age only. To extend the scope, this study dealt with the performance of children aged 4-7 years in 3 cities: Singapore, Beijing and Helsinki (This study is an extension of the research of Aunio, P., Niemivirta, M., Hautamaki, J., Van Luit, J. E. H., Shi, J., & Zhang, M. Young Children's Number Sense in China and Finland. (Manuscript accepted for publication in Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research) The data from Singapore were also used in the study Aunio, P., Ee, J., Lim, A., Hautamaki, J. & Van Luit, J. E. H. (2004). Young Children's Number Sense in Finland, Hong Kong and Singapore. "International Journal of Early Years Education, 12," 195-216). The Early Numeracy Test (ENT) developed by Van de Rijt, B., Van Luit, J., and Pennings, A. ("1999 Educational and Psychological Measurement, 59," 289-309) was used for this comparison. Gender differences within each age group were found to be minimal, while differences across age groups and cities were more noticeable. The findings are discussed in relation to local contexts, with implications for teaching and teacher education.
