The Role of an Early Head Start Mental Health Coordinator: Screening for Maternal Depression in a Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health Care
Canuso, Regina
Zero to Three, v27 n3 p49-55 Jan 2007
Screening for maternal depression was a core component of the P.E.A.C.E., Inc., Early Head Start program's comprehensive approach to supporting the mental health needs of low-income pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers. The addition of a mental health coordinator as a full-time staff member created an opportunity to develop a variety of mental health supports and services, including screening, consultation, therapy, and strong collaboration with community health and mental health providers. All direct service staff members participated in extensive training in order to successfully take on the responsibility for conducting the screenings for depression and for mental health promotion, prevention, and intervention. Program staff members have increased their skills in addressing the mental health needs of families; the families have benefited from the timely response to pressing issues and concerns; and the increased community collaboration has resulted in a greater public awareness of mental health issues in the county.
