Communication Patterns of Foreign Students: A Survey among the Korean Students in the University of Texas at Austin.
Kang, Tae-Young
Noting that the Korean socio-cultural background, combined with situational factors such as language difficulty and racial barriers, produce a special kind of communication pattern among Korean students in the United States, a study focused on the communication patterns of Korean students at the University of Texas at Austin. Subjects, 158 Korean students (out of a total sample of 166, or half the Korean student enrollment) completed a questionnaire developed to yield a profile of mass media behavior, cognitive perceptions, and personal interaction patterns. Results indicated that English proficiency, favorable attitude toward Americans and the United States, situational factors, and some demographic characteristics critically affected Korean students' communication patterns in terms of interpersonal relationships and media use. Among the results were the following: (1) more than 80% watch television at least two or three times a week, with most paying considerable attention to hard news content; (2) most prefer interaction with Korean colleagues to interaction with Americans; (3) most characterize their English proficiency as fair; and (4) more acquire more information related to Korea through American newspapers than through television. Overall the results suggest that Korean students exhibit three types of interpersonal relationships: open (contact with Koreans and Americans), closed (contact with Koreans only), and isolated (rare contact with either group).
